Each student having an some type of device for their own use would be great. Health class can be less paper and more research with teachers being the resource. I think this would give the students more ownership in the class they are in. You could tailor your class to fit every student need and other studetns would not know.
Who will be responsible for the decives that are lost, broken or stolen? Will we have the students pay to own or will we provide them with a device? I think if each student has to pay they would take better care of the device, but what about those stduents who can not pay?

I, too, am trying to move towards a paperless classroom and would love it if all students had their own devices to immediately respond, research, and work together. There were lots of great ideas discussed here, and I totally agree that this is the way to move toward. I worry about the students not taking care of the devices and how we would deal with that sort of problem. Most of the students would be just fine, however after asking another teacher and student what they thought, that was the first thing out of the student's mouth - that the devices will be broken and then what do we do?

For my students it would be a relief.

Reference- We are constantly have to go between rooms for research and then printing and coming back. With a tablet or other device the students would not have to print anything. They could have it, in color, at their fingertips.

Instruction- Students would have the ability to watch the instructional videos we use at their own pace. I could record more of my lessons in movie format so that they have the ability to watch anything they miss while absent and get caught up without interupting the flow of the others in class.

Assessment- students can collect their art work and create a digital portfolio. This would not only help in the grading process, but also be something that will be quite useful for applying for art scholarships. This is one of my biggest goals and would be amazing if it could happen.

In Drafting it wight not change much since we already have pc's with internet access. In Alg 1 I think a lot would change. Many of the things we do on paper could be pc based. I would use Discovery Ed, Khan Academy, and other sites more. Students could do a research of the best sites for them to learn math skills to build a library of popular math sites (don't laugh...some of us love math!). I see doing an electronic version of whiteboard activities so the students could save their work and refer to it to do homework and prepare for tests. I'm for it. I think it needs to be well thought out regarding maintenance, costs, and policies.

I can see several new doors opening to students and to teachers. I know that some teachers may be apprehensive about trying something new, but once the new has worn off and they become more comfortable I think they will be glad they made the switch. I think we will be able to reach more of our students by moving toward this more progressive approach to education.

Truly allowing the walls of your classroom to be lowered and all information to be accessed, learned and explored. What a shift! We read constantly about proven 1:1 programs and those on the brink - but really, in my opinion, by providing this shift in our classrooms, schools and in-house communities, we are communicating "let's see what's out there today". Can you imagine? A teacher or facilitator of learning, opening their day with that statement. I believe this is where we need to go. Allowing our children to explore with confidence and yet failure. A realm that opens doors and a chance to encounter others along the way. Would my day to day interactions with my students change - yes, but in progressive teachable moments - perhaps like exploring history from today backwards or what science/math concepts could change the way we look at disease, or simply greeting others across the world with a "hello, what are you up to?". Honestly Dave, I look forward to the moment when this isn't an option anymore for schools and districts but rather where we need to be. Great post!! AT

Since I have moved to an almost paperless classroom and use many web-based services, having each student be able to access the internet in my class on a daily basis would allow me to expand even more upon what I already do along with making what I already do even easier for my students. I'm all for it. When can we start?

Well, lets see, if every student is given a computer device ($$$). Will it change things? If it doesn't ,whats wrong? It should make a big difference in what student do and learn. Just I will not see it happen before retirement. I pondered.

A few thoughts:

* Hardback books could be eliminated
* Calculators no longer needed
* Spanish, French dictionaries also gone
* Maybe an electronic agenda with student I.D. code (and Picture) could be embedded for
   each electronic device issued.
* Students could log on and sign up for lunch in a google form rather paper that needs collected
*Lockers at new building could be much smaller allowing room only for lunch and coat
*Passing periods could be shortened adding minutes to instructional time each hour
**way out there - students could be notified to come to the office via their electronic device
                            thus reducing classroom disruption?
Disadvantage:

*cost of electronic device, insurance, and upkeep
*cost of license fees for on-line textbooks
*cyberbullying
*we as a staff not really utilizing the electronic devices in the most progressive manner

Depending upon the device, there are many uses in music.

Band - Individual tuners and recording devices during practice in class; assessment for playing exams would be much easier and at the conveninece of the student (smart music program allows for assessment to link up to an administrative computer for grading procedures and recorded performances)

Guitar - Music downloads as well as built in tuners and composition creations to play along with

Theory - Detailed compositions on the ipad, no wasted paper; create detailed electronic assignments

Appreciation - research projects easier to reach and download information for presentations; find music easily for projects
