Winkin’, Blinkin’ and Nod: Lessons from Mayberry

From a little read blog I posted back in 2008……

A good teacher has been defined as one who makes himself or herself progressively unnecessary.–Francis Bacon

I hate to admit it, but my favorite show is the Andy Griffith Show. This quote reminds me of the episode in which Opie had to raise three baby birds and he became rather attached to them. Andy had to convince him to let the birds venture out on their own. When the birds finally left the nest Andy says “the nest sure looks empty.” And Opie replies “But don’t the tree seem full!” Ok, really hokie reference here, but the point is we have done our job when we have taught our students the skills they need and they no longer need us because they can do what we can do….and more!

    • Maureen,
Thanks for reading! So many simple examples of common sense that can be applied to daily life can be found in those re-runs. All done in good taste without having to use many of the attention getting sensational gimmicks used today.
