NETS for teachers part IV….Assessment and Evaluation

I know, you are asking yourself when is he going to move on? Only two more posts in this series. I think that staff development linked to the use of technology is the key to changing our school for the better. This topic and the essential skills for students MUST be the focus of our school improvement for this summer!

IV.Assessment and Evaluation
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies. Teachers:

A. Apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
We have used TurnItIn.com for several years (not widely among staff though) to help assess student writing. Students need to be asked to display work they have created using technological tools.
B. Use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interepret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. Classroll.com allows us to analyze and interpret our data. We could greatly improve our ability to measure student achievement based on the Illinois State Standards if we were to base our assessments on criteria identified in our lesson plans linked to the state standards.
C. Apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students’ appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity. First we need require our students to use technology in more varied ways. We lack strategies to have them communicate and collaborate with students and experts in various fields from outside of Paris.
